Asus made huge splashes at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year with the Asus Zenfone 2 featuring the latest 64-bit Intel Atom quad core mobile processor. Shortly after, Asus announced plans to release variants of the phone to target the mid range smartphone market as well. With a recent leak that made its way onto the internet today we have what appears to be a 5-inch Zenfone 2 variant side by side with its flagship, 5.5-inch brother. Asus hinted that the lower end phones would still sport high definition displays, but would offer lower tier processors with less RAM as well. While the name for this model of the Zenfone 2 series is not officially announced, reports do coincide with previous announcements by Asus regarding the phone. The mid ranged Zenfone 2 variant will indeed possess an HD display albeit only at a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. As for the processor this phone will reportedly ship housing Intel’s first generation Intel Atom processor, rather than a scaled down version of the 64-bit Intel Atom chip to be included in the flagship Zenfone 2 model showcased at CES this year. While slightly underwhelming, the Intel Atom Z2580 will still bring 2 GHz of dual core processing power to the table which will more than likely be adequate for mid ranged smartphone users. Paired with the Intel Atom Z2580 will be 2GB of RAM, so this Zenfone 2 variant will still be capable of some light multi-tasking. As for radio connectivity, the mid ranged phone will support what is reported as a wide array of LTE carrier bands, which seems like a must at this point. Lastly, the leaked Zenfone 2 variant will be released running Android 5.0 Lollipop. The newest version of Asus Zen UI will be running on top of Android Lollipop but appears to be lightweight in interface.

This leak suggests more great things are coming from Asus in the smartphone market this year, and this mid ranged version is no exception. Running Android Lollipop with LTE connectivity and an HD display it will certainly be capable of competing with other mid ranged handsets on the market such as the Motorola G and newer models in the making. Official announcement of the phone is expected to be on March 9th with an initial red model at launch, with more colors possible. Of course since this leak is not official, details could certainly change between now and the official unveiling.
