We’ve seen four generations of the Sony Xperia Z smartphone in just two years. The original Z was followed six months later by the Z1, then another six months later the Z2 appeared and recently, the Z3 was introduced. The core Z flagship handset has been joined by other members of the family, including the tablets, compact versions and the Z Ultra, a phablet equipped with a 6.4-inch, 1080p display. And because Sony’s flagship bandwagon rolls around every six months, we’ve already seen rumors of the next device, the fifth in the Xperia Z line up, the Z4. We’ve already covered some of these rumors here at Android Headlines. We’ve covered that the Z4 range will be powered by the 64-bit, pair of quad cores, said to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 4 GB of RAM. Sony are deleting the MicroSD card but adding Qi wireless charging. Losing the MicroSD slot isn’t the end of my world although I’ll miss it. Still, bumping the internal memory up to 32 GB will help and I especially welcome the addition of Qi charging.

We are seeing more and more rumors and these have now been joined by a render, which shows the Z4 and Z4 Ultra compared with the current Z3. And if there’s one way that people would like to see the Z3 improved upon it’s to reduce the bezels; it’s not quite at the same level as the iPhone but it’s not so far removed. When we look at the Z4, it’s quite a bit smaller than the Z3. Indeed, the Z4 Ultra is approximately the same size as the Z3 despite packing a much bigger screen, but the rumor reckons it’ll have a 6.0-inch display with a 2,560 by 1,440 pixel display here rather than the original Z Ultra’s 1080p screen. Around the back, the Z4 Ultra will come with the 20.7 MP Sony Exmor RS rear camera, Sony G lens and is going to support 12-bit RAW capture. The rumor also says that the Z4 Ultra will also come with stereo front speakers, but looking at the render, it’s hard to see where it’ll fit.

As far as renders go, these could be completely off the mark. Or they’re close to the real deal. One of the reasons why the Sony Xperia Z range have large bezels is associated with what Sony call “omnibalance,” that is, keeping the weight distribution balanced so that the handset doesn’t feel like it’s about to flip you in the chin when holding it close to your face; perhaps Sony have found the magic bullet here?
