First Tizen Smartphone Launching in Japan This March, Carrier Says

Samsung’s long-delayed Tizen OS will finally launch this March on Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, the company told Agence France Press earlier this week. Samsung hopes the open-source operating system will be a hit in Japan by catering to the country’s unique mobile preferences.

Before its official release, Tizen is expected to make an appearance at Mobile World Congress next month, where Samsung will show off the new OS and its corresponding app store. The first Tizen smartphones were initially expected to launch in 2013, but faced multiple delays as Samsung and its partners struggled to perfect the new software.

Despite plans to launch in Japan and other parts of Asia, Tizen likely won’t be hitting the U.S. any time soon. In an interview with Fierce Wireless, Samsung exec Ryan Bidan explained that the American market may be to tough to crack early on.

“The U.S. market is pretty mature,” he said. “Bringing a new entrant here that doesn’t meet a certain performance bar would be a challenge. Recognizing that, we don’t want to set ourselves up for failure.”

The first Tizen smartphones may be relegated to Japan and a few other Asian markets, but hopefully we’ll still get a chance to see them in action next month at MWC.
